1. A carving in their front door. A Celtic shield knot cut into the wood by an even hand, but unmistakably, a hand, with all its subtle imperfections. And within the apartment, a second, more elaborate decoration embedded in the door to Scott's own room. (Protection in the old way of thinking—but a lovely decoration, too.)

3. One of his helmets, favored for practicing in the rink, mysteriously goes missing. (He has no way of knowing it makes its way to the bottom of the lake, weighed down by a stone bound up inside of it. Votive offerings were once made of weapons and armor—a hockey player has their own.)
